Statement from the BIHS Executive regarding the passing of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II

The British and Irish Hypertension Society Executive Officers have met today and wish to express their sincerest sorrow at the passing of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II. Our sympathy is also with all the members of the Royal Family.

We are informed by the management of the Barbican and The Grand Hotel in York that our Annual Scientific Meeting can proceed as planned. There are no government instructions in place that affect us. We have therefore decided to go ahead with this year’s meeting and show as much respect and dignity as we can, in light of the period of national mourning.

We will not stipulate what clothing people wear, but some may consider wearing dark clothing.

At the beginning of Plenary Session 1 (Monday 12th September, 13.30) we will start the meeting with a minute’s silence.

In respect to the social events, such as the Tuesday night dinner, we are not planning any entertainment.  During the period of national mourning, the BIHS will keep their official communications and social media to essential messages only. We request that our delegates and members show restraint and respect on their social media channels during the ASM.

Sincerely,

Terry McCormack, on behalf of the Executive Committee.
